King's Day (Koningsdag) is an orange-filled celebration held annually for king Willem-Alexander his birthday on 27 April. It is renowned for being one of the biggest and most colorful festivities in the Netherlands, and we also celebrate it in Curacao. The Avila Beach Hotel has a special bond with the Dutch Royal Family. One of our beaches is named Queens beach as well as the Royal Beachfront Apartment because of Princess Beatrix. Celebrating King's Day in Curaçao combines the best of Dutch traditions with the island's unique, cozy charm and vibrant culture. This special day, marked by a sea of orange, is the perfect occasion to immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere while also finding time to relax.
1. Start Your Day Like Royalty
Begin your morning with a delightful breakfast fit for kings and queens. Gather with loved ones, accompanied by your choice of orange jus d'orange or a mimosa. Embrace the joyful spirit of the holiday from the very first bite! Indulge in Avila’s delicious breakfast buffet by the sea at The Pen Restaurant & Terrace (and within walking distance of where the festivities are taking place).
2. Wear Orange
Dress in your most festive orange attire—the brighter, the better! This not only shows your celebratory spirit but also unites you with everyone participating in the festivities.
3. Attend Local Events
King's Day in Curaçao is filled with events from live music performances to markets and games. Venture out to Pietermaai District & Punda, where streets come alive with music, second-hand items, a kids' fair where children sell their old toys and such, live entertainment, displays by local dance groups, and street food. The energy and music, ranging from typical Dutch to Latin tunes, will make you feel right at home. For adult fun with DJ’s etc. we advise to visit the local events in the afternoon.
4. Family Fun
For a family-friendly experience, participate in traditional games like “koekhappen” (cookie biting) or sack races. These activities offer cozy fun and a touch of Dutch nostalgia that can be enjoyed by all ages. For kids, there are also water bouncers, so make sure to bring their swimwear and a towel. For family fun we advise to visit the local events as of early in the morning.
5. Relax by the Sea
After enjoying the hustle and bustle, retreat to Punda Beach (Marichi Beach). Unwind by the sea and take a leisurely refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters.
6. Sunset Toast
Cap off your day with a toast to King Willem-Alexander as the sun sets. Whether from a beachside bar or Handelskade terrace, it’s a moment to reflect on the day's joy and the festive vibes that King's Day in Curaçao can bring.
Make sure you stay hydrated and don't forget to apply sunscreen. Here's to a King's Day well spent, full of fun, relaxation, and cultural delight🧡
