WILLEMSTAD – The Avila Beach Hotel is proud to announce that it has received the Travelife Gold certification for the fourth consecutive time. Travelife is an international label that promotes sustainability in the tourism sector. The Avila Beach Hotel received the Travelife Gold Award for the first time in 2013, and this certification has recently been extended following an intensive audit. A Travelife Gold certification means that the accommodations contribute in improving the impact on the environment and implement such a social policy. The hotel had to meet a standards checklist with a total of 163 requirements which the hotel had to comply with. This was successfully achieved in collaboration with Zyta de Koeijer (ZK Consultancy). The Avila Beach Hotel is therefore extremely proud of this beautiful award.
The sustainability requirements of Travelife are constantly increasing. Every two years there is a new audit where points for improvement are added that must be carried out within six months, to obtain the Gold label. The oldest operational hotel in Curaçao has received this sustainability certification because it has an excellent social policy; for example, by hiring mainly local staff and purchasing as many local products as possible. Taking good care for the environment and community; for example, by donating furniture and other items to charities and the Avila staff makes a small monthly contribution to the nearby Oranjeschool which is doubled by management. In addition, the Avila Beach Hotel is also focusing on the environment (both above and below water) and animal welfare in Curaçao. Examples of execution of this are participating in Clean Ups, placing a 'pop-up' coral nursery but also reducing the use of water, electricity and plastic.
More and more companies and individuals are focusing on sustainability when selecting a hotel or accommodation. Sustainability nowadays is primarily seen as a component of quality, which is why a growing number of guests are opting for a hotel with a green label. Guests who visit the Avila Beach Hotel can also help to create a better Curaçao. By participating in the Pack for a Purpose project, where they can bring school supplies for the nearby Oranjeschool and the Schotborghschool in Koraal Specht. Due to great success, the Kolegio Don Sarto School in Soto has been added to this project since May this year. In addition, the hotel is planting one tree in Haiti (one of the most deforested countries in the world) for every room night booked directly through the Avila website.
