WILLEMSTAD –The Avila Beach Hotel, the oldest operational hotel in Curaçao, opened in 1949, celebrated its 75th anniversary in grand style with a spectacular Great Gatsby-themed party on June 1, 2024. This milestone commemorated the day in 1977 when the late Danish previous owner, Mr. Finn Nicolaj (Nic) Møller, purchased and extensively renovated the hotel, marking a significant moment in the hotel's history.
A Grand Entrance
The evening began with guests arriving at valet parking and walking down a black carpet. Outside, the enchanting sounds of CJ Opus on the violin set the mood. Guests were welcomed with a refreshing drink and small bites, followed by a warm welcome from General Manager Robbin Vogels and his executive team. A special photo opportunity with the Avila 75 backdrop captured the memories.
Pre-Concert Lounge
Inside the pre-concert lounge, guests mingled to the tunes of Avila's blues band and invited artists while enjoying signature cocktails from the mixology bar, cognac bar, and hors d'oeuvre. The ambiance was enhanced by vintage lounge areas, Avila’s 1926 Rolls Royce, and living statues, all set against opulent Great Gatsby decor.
The Main Event
At 8 PM, the main event began with dancers leading guests to the concert stage. Roderick 'Vader' Volk, the evening's MC, introduced the big band led by Randal Corsen, featuring local musicians and a 12-piece string orchestra flown in from Venezuela. The concert opened with a waltz by Wim Statius Muller, followed by a speech from Minister Cijntje. General Manager Robbin Vogels closed the first part with a heartfelt speech and a champagne toast, leading into the song "Danki" by Dibo D and a spectacular fireworks display on Great Gatsby's Rhapsody in Blue.
A perfect fit alongside the heartfelt gratitude expressed by General Manager Robbin Vogels: "Avila is a very special place. Although much has changed over the years, one thing remains the same: the magic of this place, its history, and its place in society. When we took over the hotel in 2015, we mainly focused on preserving this. I am, therefore, particularly grateful to share Avila's 75th anniversary with all of you tonight. Without you, we would never have achieved this. What we have built together and will continue to build is something to be proud of." Robbin Vogels said.”
Unique Performances
After a brief intermission, the concert continued with lively performances by Christine Corsen, Dibo D, Aemy Niafeliz, Yumarya Grijt, Ephrem J, and Izaline Calister. The music ranged from classic hits to contemporary favorites, ensuring that everyone was on their feet dancing. Dancers added to the festive atmosphere throughout the night.
Post-Concert Festivities
Post-concert festivities included drinks and bites in the lounge, a dessert corner with anniversary cupcakes, and coffee from the hotel's coffee truck. A cigar roller was also present. All guests received goodie bags with special gifts as a token of appreciation.
